The original idea, hatched in 2012 and launched in 2014, was to bring the boutique indoor-cycling experience (such as what you can get from SoulCycle or CycleBar) into the home, making it convenient for time-strapped professionals, stay-at-home parents, far-flung suburbanites, and even the president of the United States to get in a challenging, competitive, high-tech pedaling session whenever they like. Peloton also offers off-the-bike exercise classes focused on running, yoga, strength training, boot camp, and meditation. It all comes with a boutique-fitness-class price tag, with the Peloton Bike alone costing $1,445 including delivery and setup (but minus tax), plus a $44-per-month membership fee for the streaming content and the iOS or Android app, obligatory for the first year (more on that later). Peloton raised the price of its membership from $39 a month to $44 a month on June 1, 2022, maintaining that the hike was necessary for the company to continue delivering high-quality content to members.

For our initial testing of the Peloton Bike, we recruited four fitness-oriented New Yorkers who had varying experience with boutique indoor cycling to take it for a spin: Laura, an active new mom who was just back from a break from exercise, including regular boutique cycling classes and some at the Peloton studio, and had been seriously considering buying a Peloton; Rachel, an avid exerciser who took a variety of boutique fitness classes weekly, including indoor cycling at SoulCycle and Cyc; David, a triathlete who frequently used an indoor trainer with his bike but had never taken a boutique cycling class; and Brittni, a long-term member of the now-closed Flywheel, who took five or six classes a week and preordered its now-defunct bike (the first true Peloton competitor) the day it was announced.
The included limited warranty covers the tablet, mechanics, parts, and service for issues related to normal wear and tear for one year (and five years for the bike frame). An additional 48 months of coverage costs $199.
The Bike+ has the same limited warranty as the Bike: one year for the tablet, mechanics, parts, and service, with coverage encompassing any concerns stemming from regular use, and five years for the frame. An additional 12 months of coverage costs $175, and another 27 months of coverage goes for $230. (You can purchase extended coverage at any time during the first year you own the Bike+.) For those who own the original Bike and are interested in an upgrade, Peloton used to offer a trade-in program that involved a $700 rebate and complimentary pickup of the old bike. The program is currently on indefinite pause.

In August, Peloton brought prices back up for the Bike Plus to its original, $2,495, and the Tread increased by $800 to $3,495. The original Peloton bike price stayed at $1,445, and the all-access membership also remained at $44.
In addition, Peloton launched its bike rental program so potential members could rent the Peloton Bike ($89 a month) or the Bike Plus ($119 a month) to try in their homes. The price includes the bike and the all-access membership. There is also a $150 one-time delivery fee. Through the rental program, you can cancel anytime or buy out the bike. The following shows what it costs to buy out the Peloton Bike from the rental program.
If you break down what you're getting for the rental at $89 a month, think of it as you're paying $44 for the all-access membership fee, plus another $45 for the bike. If you look at how much it costs in a span of a year to rent the bike alone, take the $45 bike price and multiply it by 12. In the end, you're paying $540 a year. Add on the year buy-out fee of $895 and it comes out to $1,435. Compared with the retail price of the bike ($1,445), you're only saving $10.
To spare you the math, the value of the bike exceeds its retail price if you buy it before the 12 months or after the fact. At that rate you're better off buying the bike and testing it out during the 30-day risk-free trial offer. If it doesn't work out, you can return the bike for a full refund without additional charges.
If you're not set on owning a Peloton, you could fare better off with another indoor cycling bike like the Bowflex C7 Bike, which was on sale last Prime Day for $700. Or if you're not looking for a bike with a touch screen, but can still hold a tablet, the Schwinn IC4 Indoor Cycling bike is currently $799 on Amazon. It has Bluetooth connectivity so you can also use the Peloton app if you want with this bike. If you're not looking for the latest models, you can most likely find older models of popular brands for a better deal during Early Access Prime Day. Don't forget to browse retailer sites like Nordictrack, Echelon, Bowflex, Dick's Sporting Goods or Best Buy for possible discounts. They usually like to give Amazon some friendly competition by running their own sales at the same time as Prime Day.
Finally, more than one family member can ride the Peloton bike. An all-access Peloton membership allows everyone in your household to share the bike. You just need to make sure everyone remembers their correct bike settings so it fits well from person to person. This is an underrated benefit of a Peloton bike, as having a smart bike trainer is great for a solo rider, but it can be cumbersome for two or more family members to swap their bikes in and out.
Second, you are not riding your own real bike. This is not a big deal for people who want to ride Peloton in the place of going to a spin class. But for someone training for road riding or a triathlon, you may want your intense bike workouts to translate directly to your ability to ride faster when outdoors. In that case, it might be better to be on your own bike frame while riding indoors. More on that below.
The other reason, besides cost, that we see many seasoned cyclists opt for this setup instead of Peloton is that you can ride your own bike on it. If you have invested a lot of money in your road or tri bike, and gotten the fitting just right, it is kind of nice to right it even when you are indoors.

Kind of. Peloton is sold in Peloton stores. Other than that, you need to purchase a Peloton system online. Most major metro areas of one or two stores where you can check out a bike and even do a test ride. But they are not sold in stores or bike shops the way that other cycling and fitness equipment is.
The bike and instructors are AMAZING!! I am obsessed with the bike!!! I have been taking cycling classes forever and riding outside, these classes are extremely challenging, i am so happy with the bike, all of it, i love it!!
If you are considering the purchase of a Peloton bike or tread beware! I purchased my bike for exercise 1.5 years ago; however, foul language from the instructors (F-word), foul language in the music (F-word, B-word, N- word, etc) and left wing agendas that permeate the classes and music have me ready to sell my bike and look for other options focusing on exercising instead of pushing offensive language and agendas. Can anyone recommend a system that is a political and does not have classes with profanity laced music?
